ALOYSIUS GOH – FOUNDER & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, SAGE MEDIATION

Certified as an international mediator since 2007, Aloysius has mediated more than 300 cases around the world with dispute values ranging from a few hundred dollars to more than USD1bn. Fluent in English and Chinese, he subscribes to a directive approach to mediation to help clients find meaningful and sustainable solutions to their conflicts.

Aloysius’ mediation practice focuses on commercial disputes and he has successfully resolved numerous insurance, medical negligence, corporate shareholding, and employment disputes.  Amongst his mediation clients are companies listed on the BSE, NYSE, SGX, SSE, and HSI, as well as charities, non-government organisations, and public sector entities.

Some of Aloysius’ more notable recent cases include resolving medical negligence allegations made against a major healthcare institution, settling professional claims against a major international consulting firm, facilitating negotiations between Chinese businesses over mining rights, determining the value of damaged luxury goods at a global logistic facility, and allocating assets in an acrimonious divorce between high net worth individuals.

Aloysius is on the International Panels of the Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC) and Japan International Mediation Centre in Kyoto (JIMC in Kyoto). He has spoken on numerous ADR conferences around the world on the topic of hybrid dispute protocols and international mediation skills, and works closely with leading mediation institutions such as the Straus Institute of Pepperdine University Law School, the Delhi High Court Mediation and Conciliation Centre, the China Council for Promotion of International Trade Mediation Centre, and the Bali International Arbitration and Mediation Centre.

Aloysius currently serves as a member of the International Mediation Institute’s Appraisal Committee. He is also the founding Chairman of the Peacemakers Conference, an international youth mediation workshop to promote and celebrate excellence in amicable conflict resolution in schools.

He is a Senior Faculty at the Singapore Mediation Centre and Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy, and guest lectures at the National University of Singapore Law School.

Aloysius spent a large part of his career in public service and non-profits. In addition to having served as the Chief Executive Officer and Registrar of SIMC, he was also the first General Counsel of a newly launched state university. In 2011, he was also appointed by the Ministry of Health to establish a Healthcare and Medical Disputes Mediation Unit where he led the resolution of major disease outbreak that led to 8 deaths.

In 2018, he served as a member of the Singapore Ministry of Law’s Working Committee to launch the Singapore Infrastructure Dispute-Management Protocol to encourage mediation and early neutral evaluation for mega-infrastructure disputes . In 2019, he participated in the UNCITRAL discussions in New York on reforms to Investor-State Dispute Settlement.

Aloysius is a National University of Singapore Law School Research Scholar and a Public Service Commission Humanities Scholar. He was also amongst the final nominees for the Lee Kuan Yew Graduate Scholarship in 2014.

In addition to his first degree in law, he has a Master’s degree in Law from the NUS, and a Master’s degree in Education Leadership from Boston College Lynch Education School.

Outside mediation, Aloysius is best described as a spiritual, family-oriented, fitness fanatic. He has spent a year living in the rule of silence in a French Catholic monastery, owns a Montessori Kindergarten, and has run more than 10 full marathons.
